Events for 2010 are now up!

Caring for your horse this winter.

I’m sure you will all have noticed how cold and wet it has been recently!! Keep your horse in tip top condition this winter.

Make sure they have enough fibre, either good quality hay or haylage, if you have a golden oldie who struggles to eat hay or haylage, there are many alternatives available. Allen and page fast fibre is a complete hay replacer that is soaked into a palatable mash, and is low in startch and sugar making it safe for laminitics and those suffering from cushings. Short chop forages such as graze-on and dengie Hi Fi  senior are also very helpful.

If your horse or pony finds it hard to keep condition on why not try Dengie Alfa A oil? Fibre based this provides your horse with digestable fibre and an energy level similar to a conditioning mix or cube without the starch.

Keeping your horse or pony warm will also help them keep in good condition through the winter months, there’s another excuse to buy a lovely new rug in the sales!!!

Many horses and ponies get excitable this time of year due to lack of excersise combined with longer time spent in the stable, make sure you adjust the hard feed ration accordingly to avoid fizzy behaviour. Many natives and good doers will manage perfectly well on hay and a vit/min supplement or balancer alone!!

Make sure your horse or pony always has access to fresh water,  make sure ice is broken on troughs and water buckets.

Mud fever can be a pain at this time of year, use of a good barrier cream will help keep bacteria from entering the skin and setting up infection. If your horse does succumb wash the legs and remove scabs, Nettex muddy marvel range includes a de-scabbing lotion as well as a highly effective disinfectant. Next, dry legs thoroughly and apply barrier cream before turnout. For those horses that are very prone consider using turnout chaps.

The committee at ADRC look forward to seeing you at many events in 2010 and wish you and your horses and ponies a happy and healthy new year!
